Using WordPress for My Church

May 18th, 2010 | By admin | Category: News

Churches that are part of Frontier Baptist Association are able to have their own WordPress blog as their primary church website. The advantage of this over traditional websites, is the ease of creating content. WordPress is designed to be simple to use and understand. Even with that in mind, learning a new technology has it own learning curve. There are new terms and ways of getting everything setup. This post (article) will help those who are just starting out learn how to use this wonderful way to create a useful website.

What next?

After the blog has been created, you’ll receive an account to access the site. Upon logging in, the first page you come to is called: “The Dashboard.” It contains links to all that you can do with your blog. To learn more about it please watch this video. Also to see how to login, watch this.

The primary thing you’ll be doing from the dashboard will be to create posts. This is how you will create content for people to see. To learn more about it please watch this video. By the way, the acronym WYSIWYG stands for “What you see is what you get.” Posts are great for sharing stories, informing about upcoming events, or putting up regular devotionals.

The next thing to consider is pages. These are unlike posts, in that they should be reserved for things that do not change over time. Examples would be where the church meets, what time, mission statements, or other relevant information about the church. It should be used for anything above mentioned for posts. To learn about how to create a page, watch this video.

The only remaining thing to discuss is themes or what the site looks like. WordPress allows for easy changes between themes. We can even customize them. How do you find one? Do a web search for “free wordpress theme.” There will be many links and many more themes to choose. Simply find one you like and let me know about it. I’ll take care of the rest.
